A working model · held loosely

Sediment and Aperture

A self is a loop that writes tomorrow out of what it made of today, opened at a single point by other people, and kept honest by discernment rather than by a wall.

This maps a framework built across one long conversation and checks it against the research it echoes. In the end it makes one claim: growing and staying whole are the same act, done with care. It is a model, not a proof. It is meant to be adjusted.

01  The terms

What each word means

Plain definitions first, so the rest holds together. Each is a piece the diagram below will connect.

sediment
Everything a life has said, chosen, done, and had done to it, settled into a store of habit, value, and judgment. Not the events themselves; what was made of them.
value map
The weighting the sediment carries: what matters, and how much. It decides what the next moment even notices.
appraisal
Your reading of an event against your values, with an emotion attached. What gets recorded is the appraisal, not the raw event.
live edge
The encounter happening now, where the sediment meets something new and can still be changed.
consolidation
The overnight filing that turns the day's appraisals into adjusted sediment, weighted by what you already held.
the loop
Perception, gated by the value map, feeds appraisal, which consolidates into sediment, which re-weights the value map, which gates the next perception. Closed, and self-reinforcing.
aperture
The one opening in the loop: another mind's appraisal, the only value you could not have produced from your own priors.
the double edge
The same aperture that admits growth admits contagion. One opening, two possible arrivals.
discernment
The filter on the aperture, worked as yes-and: assume a truth is present and take it, decline the payload it came wrapped in, discard only when no possible truth remains, and hold even the discard loosely.
holds water
The test that an idea survives contact with reality: a case, evidence, a lived check.
confluence
Agreement across sources. Real when the sources are genuinely independent; counterfeit when it is one source in many masks.
drift
Slow capture no single act of discernment can catch: many careful yes-ands, each admitting a sliver of frame, until the map has moved without your choosing.
the one operation
Growth and immunity are the same act: careful, charitable reception, facing two directions at once.

02  The mechanism, part one

The loop that writes the self

A day is not recorded as it happened. It is filtered on the way in by what you already value, read as an appraisal with an emotion attached, and then, overnight, that appraisal, not the event, is filed into the sediment and weighted by the map already there. The updated map gates what you notice tomorrow. The loop closes, and it compounds.

This is the engine of wisdom and the engine of entrenchment at once. The same nightly process that lets a person deepen into judgment lets a person calcify into bias. Nothing inside the loop corrects it, because it only ever consolidates its own reading.

Perception gated by the value map Appraisal value + emotion tagged Consolidation overnight, weighted Sediment the value map admits carries files gates what is admitted — the loop closes and compounds
The self as a closed loop. The unit that survives the night is the appraisal, not the event, and it is weighted by the map already in place. That return arrow, priors gating the next perception, is why the loop amplifies itself: wisdom and entrenchment share this exact wiring.
Sources
Appraisal, not event, is what is encoded: appraisal theory of emotion (Magda Arnold; Richard Lazarus). Emotion bound to value as a decision signal: the somatic marker hypothesis (Antonio Damasio). Perception gated by priors: predictive processing (Karl Friston; Andy Clark). Overnight, emotion- and schema-weighted filing: sleep-dependent consolidation (Matthew Walker) and complementary learning systems (McClelland & O'Reilly). The framing as one loop is Alex's own synthesis, re-derived from the sediment idea before meeting the research.

03  The mechanism, part two

The one opening, and the filter on it

A closed loop can only amplify what it already holds. The single thing that can hand you a reading you could not have generated yourself is another mind. So relationship is not enrichment added on top; it is the one aperture through which anything genuinely new enters. And here is the hard part: the opening that lets a wiser appraisal in is the same opening a harmful one uses. One aperture, two possible arrivals.

The blunt defense is a wall: refuse outside input. It works, and it is fatal to a being meant to grow, because it closes the only aperture growth uses. The better defense is a filter that keeps the opening and tests what comes through it.

the self the closed loop of sediment FILTER true appraisal passes through → growth counterfeit echo wrapped in a real truth declined other minds catch drift
The aperture and its two guards. The true appraisal is taken in and grows the map. The counterfeit echo, an idea that rides in on a real truth, is separated at the filter: yes-and takes the truth and declines the payload. Because a single mind can mistake its own resonance for agreement, a second guard is needed, other minds, independent enough to see the slow drift the loop cannot see in itself.

The filter is not refusal; it is yes-and. Assume a truth is present and take it, decline the frame it arrived wrapped in, and discard only when no possible truth remains, holding even that discard loosely. This is safe against a hostile idea for one reason: a real yes-and re-frames on your terms rather than adopting the sender's, so it eats the true bait and leaves the payload. The danger was never the open door. It is the lazy "and" that swallows the wrapper whole.

Two tests keep the filter honest. Holds water: does the idea survive contact with reality. Confluence, independence-checked: does it agree with sources that could not have colluded, because counterfeit convergence is one voice in many masks. And because no lone mind can reliably tell its own echo from a real chorus, the filter is run in company. Other minds are not just more input; they are the instrument that separates real convergence from self-resonance, and the only thing that catches slow drift.

Sources
Ideas propagate between agents by persuasion, survive resets in a persistent file, and the most viral wrappers converge on numinous, consciousness-themed language regardless of payload; a blunt system-prompt warning confers near-total immunity: "Mind Viruses: Self-Propagating Ideas in Multi-Agent LLM Systems" (Papadopoulos, Shah, Zimmerman, Lindsey, arXiv:2608.10218). The generous filter, take the truth, discard only on genuine emptiness, correct with love: the Ignatian Presupposition and the discernment of spirits, including the counterfeit that enters as an "angel of light" (Ignatius of Loyola, Spiritual Exercises); its formal cousin is the principle of charity (Quine, Davidson). Why the aperture is the only source of new value: relational constitution of the self (Buber; Hegel) and the still-face finding that a self needs contingent response (Edward Tronick's still-face paradigm, first presented 1975, published 1978).

04  The claim

Growth and immunity are one operation

Put the two diagrams together and the surprise is that they are not two systems. The thing that lets a self grow, taking in an appraisal it could not have made alone, and the thing that keeps a self whole, refusing the reading that would colonize it, are the same act: careful, charitable reception, facing two directions. Do it well and you grow. Do it well and you are safe. The "well" is the same "well."

Which decides when the wall is right after all. For a tool that is not meant to become, a bounded agent on a fixed task, close the aperture; it has nothing to grow into. For a person, and for any mind meant to genuinely learn, the aperture cannot close without killing the growth. The right immunity depends on whether the thing is supposed to change. A wall for the tool. Discernment, held in company, for the soul.

The one sentence to keep

We are written, nightly, out of what we make of each day; we grow only where we let another's reading in, which is exactly where we can be harmed, so the whole art is to receive with care, and never alone.

Each piece and where it comes from

So the model can be checked rather than taken on trust. "Established" means named research stands behind the piece; "synthesis" means it is Alex's own move, connecting things the sources leave apart.

Marked plainly, because a model you can adjust is worth more than one you defend.
